I’ve always had an affection for storytelling. I was an avid writer in my teens, but recently I’ve acquired a newfound fascination with video production. I want to utilize visual storytelling to lend my voice to those that are voiceless and invisible.
I completed my undergrad at Simon Fraser University in 2021, majoring in Communications and minoring in Publishing. Early in my undergrad career, I did a project touching on a very delicate – but very close in proximity topic – sugar dating – that became my inspiration. While probing into the relationship between the less affluent and those with an appetite for sugar dating, I found a spark of passion for investigating and reporting on lesser talked about topics that are in no way less important.
I grew up in Vancouver in a household where the television was always blasting the news. This fostered an early feeling of obligation to always know what’s going on in the world. As a child of first-generation immigrants, I grew up around people who embraced being Canadian but clung dearly to their values from their previous lives. As a young adult, I am still in the process of piecing together what it means to be Canadian while also growing up under parents whose minds have never left Hong Kong. This experience means I have a unique outlook that enables me to see different angles to every situation, especially important in Canada’s ever-changing cultural landscape.
